Why is it bad to compare yourself to others?

Why is it bad to compare yourself to others

Do you always compare yourself with others? Do you often see others achievements vs you own? Do you feel that others are living their life in a great way than you own?

Comparing yourself to others is one of the easiest ways to get upset and feel about yourself. You see what people are doing in social media, at workplace, in relationships, and compare yourself with these folks.

When you start comparing, everyone seems to be more wealthier than you. Everyone has better job title and nicer home. Everyone are better looking and are physical fit as well, or they just have better time in their life.

These comparisons often leads us to be more negative in life. And ultimately leads us to path of unhappiness. They often make you feel jealous, inferior, and inadequate. This leads to poor decision making because you have greater stress, anxiety, and depression.

So let’s dive into more details reasons why is it really bad when you compare yourself to others:

You see results and not efforts

When we compare ourselves to others, most of the time we tend to look only at the success (or things they have achieved). What we most often miss out is the years of effort somebody has put up to achieve the success they have today. It is not a good practice to jump towards the end and compare the results alone. This makes us feel upset of not doing something which others are able to do.

You are not them

Comparing yourself to others means you are comparing what you see in others to what you know about yourself. Things always look pleasant from outside than what it is inside. Most people always put up a greater story and good front, trying to make themselves look better to the outside world than what they are inside. You have no idea about what they feel inside.

You are Unique

Not just you. Because every person is unique to themselves and to others, you really don't compare yourself to others. You might have different strengths and weaknesses, while others might have something else. We are all special in our own ways, therefore comparing is definitely not a good idea. By comparing, you are simply taking away all the positive things about yourself and filling them with negative things.

Waste of TIme

When you are compare yourself to others, you generally try to get in more specifics about what all they have vs what all you don't have. Technically, you are wasting lot of time in doing things which are not worth enough. We need to understand that our time is limited and there are only few numbers of hours in a day. So why waste this time in worrying about others?

Life is not for Grades

In School/College, you might have been taught to get good grades and to beat others. However, in life, you just can't get 100% grades all the time. What you really need to worry about is the growth percentage (what you were last month/year vs what you are this month/year).

Killing joy of achievement

When you try to do new things, you generally feel happy because there is a joy of accomplishing it. Let’s say you start writing 1 blog a day, and then you write 2 blogs a day, and then 3. As and when you write more, you generally feel happy because you have achieved more than what you were doing yesterday. However, if you compare this with someone who is a problogger and writes 10 blogs a day, then you might kill the joy of achievement.

Put up focus on wrong person

When you compare yourself to others, you focus on the other person all the time - what they have done, what they are doing, what they have achieved, etc. But you have no control over the other person. All you have is control on yourself. You are the only person you should be comparing yourself to. And improving yourself if the ultimately comparison you should have.

Hopefully, these reasons are good enough to let you know that why comparing yourself to others is really bad and why you should stop it. Now that you have already read about this, the next step is to know how to stop comparing yourself to others.
